Alumni of the Yale Russian Chorus

Charlottesville, VA
In April of 2019, Alumni of the Yale Russian Chorus are gathering for concerts and workshops in Charlottesville. Founded in 1953 as a response to the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, the Russian Chorus has always included not only Yale students but citizens from Hew Haven and its surroundings, and now has more than two hundred alumni.
We are not only a chorus but a civic endeavor, making community between separated peoples wherever we sing. With Russian liturgical music and composed songs setting off folk repertoire both old and contemporary, we use choral music to reveal a common humanity beneath the political and social systems which confine us.
To promulgate our musical heritage and to pursue our project of cultural solidarity, we are participating the Tom Tom Festival, with street singing on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville Friday afternoon (3:00 – 5:00 pm) and concerts Saturday April 13th at Christ Church (7:00pm) and Sunday April 14th at The Haven (2:00pm). There will be receptions after both concerts, to which the audiences are invited.
