Ellen M. Bassett

Urban and Environmental Planning, School of Architecture, University of Virginia
Chair and Associate Professor
Ellen M. Bassett is a Chair and Associate Professor in Urban and Environmental Planning
in the School of Architecture. Her areas of research interest and expertise are land use
planning and law, climate change planning, health and the built environment, and
international development. Her teaching focuses on land use and environmental law,
land use planning, and applied practice. Her research focuses on community decision-
making around land and natural resources, including understanding how different
societies and cultures create institutions (e.g., property rights, regulations) for their
management. Her current research is examining democracy and governance in Kenya
subsequent to the adoption of a new Constitution in 2010. Kenya’s broad-based
institutional reform represents an ambitious and rather unprecedented governance
experiment in Sub-Saharan Africa; it has significant implications for urban sustainability,
land and natural resource management, built form, and the practice of urban planning
within the country. Historic preservation is more of a private passion—reflected in the
lovingly rehab of a 1904 bungalow in Portland, Oregon and an obsession with the urban
fabric of Detroit, Michigan, the downtown of her childhood.
