Elizabeth H. McGowan is a longtime energy and environment reporter based in Washington, D.C. Since May, she has covered Virginia’s transition to clean energy for the Energy News Network, a nonprofit news organization based in the Twin Cities. Her freelance news reports and features have appeared in Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine, Grist magazine, Yale Environment 360, the journal Appalachia, and other numerous other publications. As a staff writer for InsideClimate News, her groundbreaking dispatches from Kalamazoo, Mich., “The Dilbit Disaster: Inside the Biggest Oil Spill You Never Heard Of” won a 2013 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. An e-book version of the narrative won the Rachel Carson Book Award from the Society of Environmental Journalists. McGowan started her career at daily newspapers in Vermont and Wisconsin, and served as a Washington correspondent for Crain Communications and Energy Intelligence. She admits to being fascinated with Virginia’s opportunity to lead a U.S. offshore wind revolution.
