Cliff Murphy has served as the Director of Folk & Traditional Arts at the National Endowment for the Arts since 2015. He is the past Director of Maryland Traditions, the Folklife program of the Maryland State Arts Council, where he served from 2008-2015. Cliff has co-produced radio features on Maryland Folklife with Aaron Henkin at WYPR 88.1FM in Baltimore, and co-founded the Maryland Traditions Folklife Festival in 2011. He is the author of the book Yankee Twang (2014), which tells the story of country music in New England, and is the co-author (with Henry Glassie and Doug Peach) of Ola Belle Reed: Southern Mountain Music on the Mason-Dixon Line (2015). A former working rock musician from New Hampshire, Cliff holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Brown University, and lives in Baltimore with his wife and four energetic kids.
