Part of the Community Workplace Workshop Series

As designers, creators and users alike, what’s our responsibility when it comes to creating media for an addiction-prone culture? The numbers aren’t looking good. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders represent the most common mental illnesses in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year. Technology is reshaping our brains. In real time we’re observing its effects, and in real time we’re suffering from its effects. As designers, we’re often creating media that is, at its core, engineered to persuade. We have an inherent responsibility in how we shape behavior. Causing users to be addicted to your platform may create a consistent revenue stream, but it will never contribute to humanity’s greater good. In this workshop, we'll explore philosophical pivots needed to embrace responsible digital design, tangible exercises we can use to navigate user experience, and ways we can infuse this new approach into our organizations in a meaningful and sustainable way.
