What is a Community Table?

It’s a simple idea: bring people in our community together to share a meal, a conversation, and build common ground. Getting to know one another can lead to greater awareness and understanding, can begin to build trust, and form new relationships. This begins with simply saying “hello.”

At this Community Table, UVA President Ryan will share opening remarks around his vision for bridging community around some of the newly identified goals put forth by the community Working Group such as: quality jobs with decent wages and a chance of promotion, quality housing that families can afford, quality affordable healthcare, and high quality educational opportunities from birth through higher education.

“A Community Table” captures the spirit and intention of the United Way by providing a platform for people in our community to come together around a table and build common ground, with equity and respect. These new relationships, perspectives, and understanding will inform how the United Way identifies solutions to issues challenging our community’s most vulnerable residents. In 2019, we will host a series of small Tables to give community members from all backgrounds the chance to come together over a meal to explore new ways to serve our community. Tables will focus on the United Way’s Impact Areas of School Readiness, Self-Sufficiency, and Community Health.

Attendees at the Community Tables embrace multiple viewpoints, welcome diversity (race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, religious and political beliefs etc.), act with respect, and exercise active listening. They want to foster relationships fueled by trust and respect to strengthen our community.
